"THE BUFFALO MAY 10, 2017 OBITUARIES Jan. 1, 1933 May 7, 2017 Robert P. Jagord, Outstanding BY JANE KWIATKOWSKI RADLICH NEWS STAFF REPORTER Robert P. Jagord, Air Force veteran and taxpayer advocate who worked tirelessly for the Cheektowaga community, died Sunday in Sisters of Charity Hospital. He was 84.

Mr. Jagord and his wife, the former Alice Choinski, spent most of their together living in Cheektowaga. They moved to Marilla in the early 2000s. They would have been married for 62 years on May 30, said Mrs. The first years of their marriage spent in Bermuda, where Mr.

Jagord served as an Air Force staff sergeant during the Korean War, Mrs. Jagord said. Upon his discharge, Mr. Jagord took on three jobs while attending school at the University of Buffalo, Mrs. Jagord.

"It took him seven years to earn degree," she said. "We didn't have time together, but with a mortgage, payment and four kids, he worked he never complained about it." Mr. Jagord worked 38 years at the old Iroquois Gas Co. and National Fuel. He also was a licensed real estate broker, and a title searcher for Northeast Abstract Title Co.

Mr. Jagord's extensive involvement in the community and in veterans' affairs resulted in numerous awards and accolades. He was named Outstanding Citizen in 1970 by the former Cheektowaga Times newspaper.

Former Erie County Comptroller Alfreda Slominski presented Mr. Jagord with the Taxpayer Advocate Award in 1987. The Paul J. Schifferli Disabled American Veterans Chapter 150 awarded him an Outstanding Service Award in 1986. Mr.

Jagord was elected three times as vice chairman of the Cheektowaga Republican Town Committee, from 1982 to 1988. He also served as chairman of the former Maryvale U-Crest Cub Scout Pack 667 from 1962 to 1967. In his retirement, Mr. Jagord had two favorite hobbies, recalled his son Mark. "He enjoyed playing cards and reading The Buffalo News," said Mark.

"He couldn't wait to get his newspaper. He looked forward to it." In addition to his wife and his son Mark, Mr. Jagord is survived by three other sons, Ronald, James and Robert; and six grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in St.

The Rev. Elton J. Rengstorf, of Lewiston, died April 6 in Niagara Hospice in Lockport. He was 86. Born in Marysville, he graduated from Concordia Seminary in St.

Louis and was ordained in 1956. He served as a missionary to the Philippines for 13 years, and was president of the Lutheran Church in the Philippines from 1964 to 1968. Rev. Rengstorf served as the director of Camp Pioneer in Angola, and he was executive director of the eastern district of the Lutheran Layman's League from 1969 to 1981. Andrew Lutheran Church from 1981 to 1983, of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Colden from 1983 to 1994, and Escarpment Lutheran Church in Lewiston from 1998 until 2003.

He also was mission executive of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Eastern District from 1991 to 1998. His first wife, Marion Dallman, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Bridges; four daughters, Ruth Thielo, Laura Krug, Jean and Joyce Tunnard; two stepsons, Mark and Michael Bridges; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. May 20 in the Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 915 Oneida Lewiston.

He was born in Niagara Falls on June 3, 1967, the son of Bonnie Lou (Garrow) Curtis of Lockport and the late Joseph Curtis. He received his BA in Marketing from the University of Buffalo. Joseph worked for various businesses in Niagara County as a marketing analyst. An avid local sports enthusiast, he was a season ticket holder for the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills.
