In the bustling skylines of Africa, from Dakar to Lomé, a name resonates as a beacon of modern architecture and sustainable urban development: Pierre Goudiaby Atepa. This Senegalese engineer, architect, and businessman is not just shaping the physical landscape of the continent but also advocating for Africa-centric design, economic independence, and sustainable practices.
Born on June 30, 1947, in Ziguinchor, Senegal, Pierre Goudiaby Atepa's journey is a testament to perseverance, talent, and a clear purpose. His story began with a scholarship to the prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, where he honed his architectural skills, as he revealed in an exclusive interview with Business Insider Africa during the Fii Senegal 2025 investment Forum.
"Architecture-wise, I was fortunate to study at one of the greatest architectural schools, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York. I graduated in 1973, and I was very lucky," he shared.
His passion for architectural excellence led him to win an international competition for the Central Bank of West Africa's headquarters in Senegal, a 22-story building that, 50 years later, remains the tallest in Dakar. However, this achievement also highlights a broader issue: Africa's architectural progress is often hindered by the lack of long-term vision.
"It was a 22-story building, and at the time, the tallest in Dubai was only 10 stories. But 50 years later, it's still the tallest in Dakar, while Dubai now boasts 200-story buildings. This shows that Africa is regressing," he noted.
To combat this setback, Pierre Goudiaby Atepa has embarked on ambitious projects, with details to be revealed in due time. His philosophy revolves around building Africa's future with vision and cooperation, not just steel and cement.
"My life's work is to 'make Africa great again,' but not by copying other countries. Instead, we use indigenous creativity and design to solve Africa's unique challenges," he emphasized.
Atepa's current initiatives include constructing entirely new towns across Africa using innovative financial mechanisms that minimize or eliminate the need for significant government spending. He proudly states, 'But now, I focus on new cities; we've developed a concept to create cities that cost nothing.'
One of his most ambitious projects is the new capital city of Gabon, a transformative national endeavor. "We're working on the new capital city of Gabon, a massive project that will instill faith in the Gabonese people in their country," he said.
Similar plans are underway for 'two or three other African countries,' including the new administrative capital city of Sierra Leone. "We're also developing the new administrative capital city of Sierra Leone and aiming to replicate this model in two or three other African nations," he added.
Atepa believes that well-managed land development projects can create wealth and significantly boost property values without external borrowing. He explained, 'If we take a piece of land worth one dollar per square meter and transform it into the new administrative capital, we can increase its value to 300 dollars per square meter, generating at least 20 billion dollars in 20 years.'
Pierre Goudiaby Atepa's portfolio includes iconic structures like the Monument de la Renaissance Africaine in Dakar, a 49-meter bronze figure symbolizing Africa's resilience and regeneration, unveiled in 2010. He also designed the Porte du Troisième Millénaire (Door of the Third Millennium), a monument to African resilience and hope, inaugurated in 2001.
Another remarkable project is the Centre de Conférences et Villas Présidentielles (Malabo Summit Complex) in Equatorial Guinea, showcasing his ongoing impact on Africa's urban and political landscape.
