On a crucial fourth-and-1 play, Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs' quarterback, pulled off a brilliant deception. He shouted, "This play never works, man!" loud enough for everyone to hear, including the TV cameras. It was a masterful bluff, and the Raiders fell for it, giving Mahomes just enough space to hand off to Kareem Hunt and gain the first down.
The Chiefs went on to dominate the game, winning 31-0. It was a humiliating defeat for the Raiders, who managed just three first downs and a paltry 96 yards of offense. Meanwhile, the Chiefs' offense was on fire, racking up 434 yards and keeping the ball for over 42 minutes.
"We beat ourselves," said Raiders quarterback Geno Smith. "They're a historically great team, and we're still developing. When you make early mistakes and don't take your chances, it's an uphill battle."
And it was an uphill battle indeed. The Raiders were already missing key players like All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers due to injuries. Then, during the game, they lost Maxx Crosby, their all-everything pass rusher, and defensive tackle Adam Butler to knee and back injuries, respectively.
Coach Pete Carroll described Crosby's injury as "a bit sore," but admitted they had to pull him from the game because "he just didn't look right."
"NFL is a tough game," Smith added. "You have to play the right way and meet your standards, or it's going to be an uphill battle every week."
For the Raiders, the biggest positive might have been that Smith didn't add to his already impressive interception tally this season.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid showed sympathy for the Raiders' plight, saying, "My heart goes out to Pete. You see the team with all those injuries, it's crushing, especially when Crosby goes down. I know we like to get after the Raiders, but you hate to see that."
