Director Doug Liman has revealed the status of the long-awaited science fiction action sequel, Edge of Tomorrow 2. And things sound promising. Speaking with Collider recently, Liman revealed that he is still working hard on the follow-up, which would see Tom Cruise return as Major William Cage, with the filmmaker saying he’d be “crazy” to not Edge of Tomorrow off the ground. However, he still has to figure out exactly how to “crack it.”
"I mean, Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise have never been more on top of their game than they are right now. I'd be crazy not to be trying to, you know, figure out how to make a sequel. So I am spending time trying to crack it.”

In anticipation of the new Top Gun and Mission Impossible movies, take a look at the mid-career action renaissance of Tom Cruise.
The first Edge of Tomorrow finds Cruise’s character at the center of a time-loop, and Liman admits that finding his way back into the story and its wibbly, wobbly, timey, wimey ways is proving a little difficult. But he refuses to give up.
“On the flip side, time travel's really tough. Like really, really tough. All you have to do is develop a movie with time travel to come to the conclusion that humans will never travel through time because it's hard to figure out a third act in a movie with time travel. So I know for a fact humans are never going to travel through time but I am trying to crack it."
The A-list status of both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, as well as the passionate following that the first Edge of Tomorrow has garnered since being released two decades ago, would surely make a sequel an instant hit. Here's hoping that Liman can figure out a way to bring Cruise, Blunt, the alien invaders, and the time travel shenanigans back for another go-around.

Not only is Doug Liman still trying to crack the story for Edge of Tomorrow 2, but he also recently revealed that he and Tom Cruise often discuss the project, with the Top Gun and Mission: Impossible star still fighting to get it made. For Liman, though, he will not return for more unless it’s absolutely the right thing to do and lives up to the legacy of its predecessor. He explained to Collider:
"Like obviously the system would be like just go make [it] and it doesn't even matter because it's a sequel and it'll do a billion dollars. But like, because the movie is so popular and like I'm just—I would never do that. And Tom would never do that. Emily would never do that. Like we would only—we care way too much about, like, you know, we have too much pride in our work to ever take the easy bait."
While we continue to wait for Liman to crack the time travel code and bring back Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the filmmaker will next helm The Instigators starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, which is due to land in select cinemas before streaming on Apple TV+ from August 9, 2024.
