For those who are confused, the Game comes with 1 Spark of Life, and three Souls to choose from. To create a character, you combine a Spark of Life with a Soul. That is, the Spark brings the soul to life and allows it to enter Elyria. Hence the name. Thus, you can have multiple characters simultaneously, one for each Spark of Life you have, up to the number of Souls you possess. Since you get three Souls randomly with your Basic Game, you could, theoretically, have up to three characters at a time, given the Sparks to do so. To go beyond three characters, you'd need to buy additional sparks AND souls.

Not all souls are created equal. If you were only given one soul, it may have a bias towards adventuring, for instance. However, if you want to live the quiet life of a farmer this may not be beneficial. Of course, this isn't to say that just because your soul is initially biased to adventuring, that would prevent you from being a farmer, you just don't get any benefits from your soul at the beginning.

By having multiple souls at the start of the game it allows you to have a wider range of possible advantageous starts.

It is also worth mentioning that some souls may be older, and thus more powerful, having better skill ramps. If you don't know what a skill ramp is you can read more about them here and here

The first image in the second link illustrates what I mean by a bias towards a skill, as well as the age of a soul.

Keep in mind that your characters age and die, so you can save those two extra souls to reincarnate into and continue on as a child of your first character. Or play totally different characters, it's up to you.

Erm, I know the characters age and die, but I was under the impression that the Soul lives on, so what I need to be reincarnated is a new spark of life, not a new soul. For my character to be 'reincarnated' in any way it would require my character's soul to enter a new body using a spark of life. If I used a new soul then it would not be the reincarnation of my previous character.

Thanks for the links. I was not aware of those aspects of the Souls, so that does explain why having multiple souls to choose from would be beneficial.

Although is it confirmed that this is what the three souls in the pledge packages mean? 'cause in the image you provided, there seem to be lots more than three souls on the options list.

I get that might just be to show them off, but has it been cofirmed that we will only have 3 souls to choose between when starting the game, unless you've bought extra ones? And that it's not simply that we can pick a maximum of three souls (again, unless we buy more) among a larger number of souls to choose between? 'cause if it's the latter then my points still stand.

Unless something changes, or I have missed something, it is definitely 3 souls when starting, unless you buy extra.

I think Dooodumba explained it well, but to put it simply, each soul has its own unique stats and thus a particular soul may be better suited to something than others. This way you get a choice of the one that fits most closely to what you want.

or

buy more if you wish to try your luck at improving on the current ones, if you are not happy.

You can also have alts, but whether that is actually beneficial or a hindrance is yet to be seen.
